HOT SANDWICH MAKERS CLUB – I’M FROM HUMAN – is a performance that took place at the border between Gorizia, Italy, and Nova Gorica, Slovenia, after Yamaguchi was invited to participate in a residency program in these cities, designated as the 2025 European Capital of Culture.

Originally a single city, Gorizia was divided in 1947 and separated by the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. Although the border checkpoint was abolished when Slovenia joined the Schengen Agreement in 2007, two distinct nations, languages, and economic zones continue to exist just 50 meters apart.

Along the railway line that marks the border, Yamaguchi prepared a hot sandwich using a plate that imprints the words “I’M FROM HUMAN” onto the bread. He grilled kranjska klobasa (Slovenian sausage) on the Slovenian side, then moved to the Italian side to combine it with frico (Italian cheese), completing a single sandwich.

As passersby watched with curiosity or indifference, the political line of the border intersected with the everyday act of making food. Eating the finished hot sandwich means physically digesting the message and making it part of one’s own body. In a place where different cultures, languages, and economies exist side by side, this most physical method confirms the simple fact that we are all the same human beings.
