砂を投げる/金沢より愛をこめて(Throwing sand/With love from Kanazawa)

私が生まれ育った金沢から日本海を挟んで真っ直ぐ行ったところに、以前旅したロシアが位置している。あの頃から変わったのは、実際に戦争がはじまったことだ。金沢は第二次大戦中に空襲被害を受けなかったが、自分の曾祖父が日露戦争で第9師団から出兵していた事実を知る。私はロシアの方角に向かって、日露戦争で命を落とした石川県関係者の人数と同じ回数の砂を投げることにした。

Russia, where I traveled before, is located straight across the Sea of Japan from Kanazawa, where I was born and raised. What has changed since then is that war has actually begun. Kanazawa was not damaged by air raids during World War II, but I knew the fact that my own great-grandfather had served in the Russo-Japanese War from the 9th Division. I decided to throw sand in the direction of Russia the same number of times as the number of people related to Ishikawa Prefecture who lost their lives in the Russo-Japanese War.
