Let’s Stay Well in 10 Years!

Ten years ago, Yamaguchi was working as a breakdancer in New York. Through various career changes since then, he now works as a visual artist in Paris. Having drifted to a place unimaginable from those days, Yamaguchi found himself thinking of the phrase “Let’s stay well in 10 years!” while spending his days by the Seine. He printed photographs taken during walks along the river—which had become a daily routine—using the cyanotype process, and used this childlike phrase as the work’s title. Born as a copying technique for architectural blueprints, cyanotype was a method that symbolized future plans and visions, as suggested by the Japanese expression “to draw a blueprint.” Yet it also possesses an unstable quality: its colors fade easily under the influence of light and time. Yamaguchi’s choice of this technique embodies a skepticism toward the certainty implied by the word “plan.” He entrusted to the shifting tones of blue both the trajectory of a life that has unfolded beyond his own predictions, and the anticipation and anxiety toward an uncertain future ahead. It is also an expression of the will to move forward while accepting uncertainty. An instruction sheet is enclosed with each purchased work. This constitutes a modest agreement between the artist and the purchaser.

10年前、山口はニューヨークでブレイクダンサーとして活動し、そこから様々なキャリアの変化を経て、パリで美術作家をしている。当時とは予想もしない場所へ流れ着いてきた山口は、セーヌ川で過ごす日々の中で、「10年後も元気でいようね！」という言葉を思い浮かべた。日課となったセーヌ川での散歩で撮影した写真を、サイアノタイプを用いてプリントし、その子供のような言葉をそのままタイトルとした。建築図面の複写技術として生まれ、日本語では「青写真を描く」という言葉が示すように、サイアノタイプは未来の計画や構想を象徴する技法であった。しかしその一方で、光や時間の影響で色が褪せやすいという不安定な特質を持つ。山口がこの技法を選んだことには、「計画」という言葉が持つ確実性への懐疑が込められている。自身の予測を超えて展開してきた人生の軌跡と、これから先の見えない未来への期待と不安を、移ろいゆく青の色調に託した。それは不確かさを受け入れながら、なお前に進もうとする意志の表明でもある。作品を購入した者には指示書が同封される。これは作家と購入者との間で交わされる、ささやかな約束である。
