Cyanotype, instructions, 2024

Ten years ago, Yamaguchi was breakdancing in New York; now he creates contemporary art in Paris. Having drifted to unexpected places, he has captured his daily walks along the Seine during his Paris residency through cyanotype prints.

Cyanotype, a photographic process originally used for architectural blueprints, has become synonymous with future planning—as evident in the phrase “to make a blueprint.” Yet this technique is characterized by its susceptibility to fading with exposure to light and time.

This process embodies skepticism toward the certainty implied by the word “planning.” Yamaguchi entrusts the shifting blue tones with both his life’s trajectory that has exceeded his expectations and his hopes for an unseen future. It stands as a declaration of his will to move forward while embracing uncertainty.
